John and Susan (nee Graham) STEVEN

Prepared by Dave Barker, 5 March 2001, from cemetery records & photographs, family archives, transcripts from Waipawa Mail & Hawke's Bay Herald (Mum, Max & Bernadette Hartshorn) & "125 Off the Beaten Track -A Diary of Kaikora/Otane from 1874" John Mudgway.
Where possible, records have been cross- referenced and errors corrected, however some details (especially family lists) are not validated.

John Steven

John Steven was born mid-1805. The 1841 & 1851 censuses conflict, giving his birthplace as St Cuthberts Parish, and Cockpen Parish, Edinburgh (Midlothian), respectively. His occupation was listed in marriage and census records as Wright, and in the 1851 census records as Superintendent of R? Truck Repairs. Prior to leaving Scotland he was awarded a silver medal "for his method of hanging windows", by the Royal Scottish Society of Arts.
His death certificate gives his parents as William and Grace Steven (maiden name unknown). Parish records show a William Steven married a Jean Black and had children Robert (christened 27 Feb 1763), William (possibly his father) (christened 28 Jun 1767) and John (christened 28 Jun 1767).
Other Steven families (perhaps related) in the June 1841 census are a) John Steven, Joiner (b 1776) married(?) to Mary Steven (b 1786) living in Bonnyrigg (not listed in 1851); b) [1841 & 1851 census] Thomas (b 1804) married to Ann Mein(?) (b 1811) and c) Elizabeth, unmarried (b 1813), all living in Bonnyrigg.

Susan Graham

Susan Graham was born 2 Nov 1805 in Muirburn (near Biggar, SW Scotland), Skirling Parish, to John and Grizzel Graham (nee Lindsay) 4 . The 1851 census records give her birthplace as Skirling, Pebbleshire. She was baptized 14 November 1805. Her parents had been married in one of the parishes of Glasgow on 30 (or 31) May 1799 5 . When she was born, her father was a farmer (tenant) in Muirburn, however by the time she was married her father was a farmer in Lasswade (near Edinburgh) 4,6 . Her grandfather (George Linsday) was a merchant in Glasgow 5 . She may have had an older sister Margaret born in Skirling 9 June 1803.

Marriage

John Steven and Susan Graham were married 5 February 1830 in South Leith Parish, Edinburgh 6 . [Her death certificate, that gives her marriage location as Lasswade was possibly in error, this was her residence]. Their Golden Wedding Anniversary was 6 February 1880 in Otane. Birth and census records give 3 different addresses in St Cuthberts Parish, Edinburgh, between 1839 – 1851.

Emigration

John and Susan Steven arrived in Hawke's Bay with some of their family around 1855. The obituary of John Steven stated he arrived from Australia in 1855. Apparently the family did not all travel together since his son (Alex and wife, Alice) arrived in Port Napier, together, on 1 April 1861 on the "Margaretha Roesner" 429 tons, from Port Cooper, Australia(?). A John Steven, miner aged 41? arrived in Melbourne in Jan 1854 on the "Marco Polo" – there was no record of any family. As was common at that time, he may have worked in the Victoria goldfields and the family followed at a later time. The "Marchioness" Melbourne to Wellington (or Nelson) arr 29 May 1855; reported the following passengers a Mr Stevens Snr 56; Mrs Stevens Snr 50, servant; Mrs Stevens jnr, 22, servant; Mr Stevens jnr; two female Stevens children, 11 & 7. Presumably these are John (snr, then aged 50) and Susan Steven (age 50), his daughter-in-law (unknown name, presumably John (jnr)'s wife – but possibly Mary, in error), eldest son John (then aged 24), Anne Main (then aged 12) and Grace (then aged 9). (missing is Mary, then aged 20 – who was reported to have arrived in Hawkes Bay with her parents).

Life in Hawkes Bay

His occupation was variously listed as a builder (death certificate) and farmer (electoral rolls). John (Snr) and John (Jnr) are listed in the Napier 1861 Jury List. In 1866-68 he owned section #182 in Carlyle St, Napier, but by 1868-69 this had changed to section #189, Carlyle St. It was likely he was farming since 1866-68 electoral records show he also owned 20 ac at Eskdale (in Section #75) (2). By 1868-69 ownership of land at Eskdale appeared to have been transferred to John Steven jnr (whose holding increased to 40 ac - "Eskbank" (4)). He was one of the first elders of St Paul's Presbyterian in Napier, in which church his daughter (Anne) was the first bride to be married.
It is not known when his family moved to Kaikora 1 however he was the first Postmaster/Station-Master when the P.O. was gazetted 4 Nov. 1865-1 Oct. 1874. By 1879-80 the Steven family had sold their land in Napier (2), and Wises New Zealand Directory 1883-84 & 1885-86 shows he had retired (listed as Settler). John Steven was active in the community, being a member of the establishment committee, which built St Paul's Presbyterian (Otane) in 1877, and he built Otane and Kaikora schools.
Little is recorded about Susan. By the time of their Golden wedding anniversary in Feb. 1880 they had 24 grandchildren and 2 great- grandchildren. At his death in 1894 he had 25 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren. They were buried in the Kaikora North cemetery, but were later moved to the new Otane cemetery. Their graves have no headstones. Susan died 25 Oct 1880. There are no known photographs of John or Susan.

Their descendants were:
